Merja Helander

Leading Interior architect, Helsinki

I’m an interior architect and a designer enriched with experience from various projects. During my career I have enjoyed participating in different kinds of projects, as I can often utilise the previous experience even though the objects of planning may be very different from each other.

I started at UKI Arkkitehdit at the beginning of 2020 and I’m responsible for designing commercial, cultural and educational spaces.

It is interesting to meet the users of the spaces and get to know their types of action and needs. I find it rewarding to brainstorm with users and work together with them to determine how the spaces designed for them would support their activities in the best way possible. My latest education period at Laurea – studying a degree of service designer – has given me great tools and methods to user-oriented design process and the habit of working together.

I like my job and I feel accomplished when the users are in their newly constructed spaces and feel at ease. I balance work with going to different cultural events and spending time in the nature. Biking around natural trails is especially my favourite. Scratching my pet rabbit also acts as a stress relief and feels wonderfully relaxing.
