Oulun Energia eco power plant
The new Oulun Energia 50 MW eco power plant was completed for production at the beginning of August 2012 in Laanila, Oulu. The eco power plant refines waste into energy – steam, electricity and district heating. The plant is designed to use ca. 120,000 tons of waste per year.
The eco power plant is located in Oulu in the Kemira industrial area, which has been categorised as a valuable industrial milieu. Over 40 industrial buildings designed by Alvar Aalto are located there. The architecture of the eco power plant has been adapted to the old appearance with modern materials.
Project Manager Mikael Tervaskanto is satisfied with how the project proceeded.
”The project was exactly in schedule, the budget was accurate, and the builders and designers did excellent work. Furthermore, the plant is really stylish!”
The eco power plant is both an energy and environment project. It produces energy, diversifies the production structure of Oulun Energia, and at the same time decreases load at dump sites and the emissions of greenhouse effect gases into air. With the Laanila eco power plant, also unusable clothes and shoes can now be utilised for energy production, because they can be put in with combustible waste.
Experiences from a plant refining waste into energy have been very positive. Jukka Salovaara, manager responsible for energy production at Oulun Energia, says that the reliability and performance of the plant have proved surprisingly good.
