Renovation of Jyväskylä City Theatre – Where Alvar Aalto’s Architecture Meets Modern Theatre Technology

The extensive renovation of Jyväskylä City Theatre was completed in 2026. Designed by Alvar Aalto’s architectural office and completed in 1982, the theatre building was modernised to meet the demands of contemporary theatre production while respecting its unique architectural and cultural heritage values. UKI Arkkitehdit was responsible for the project’s principal and architectural design.

The renovation involved a comprehensive upgrade of the building’s technical systems, stage facilities, and public and staff areas. The most significant functional changes included extending the studio stage underground to the level of the parking garage and replacing the main stage’s stage lifts with a new cylindrical revolving stage. The performance technology of both stages was completely renewed. Accessibility, acoustics and the functionality of public spaces were also improved.

One of the key design challenges was to accommodate extensive technical and functional modifications within a protected heritage building while making as few alterations as possible to its original character. The new solutions were carefully integrated into the existing building, preserving the original spatial arrangements, materials and architectural details. The design process involved close collaboration with the Alvar Aalto Foundation and other project specialists.

As a result, Jyväskylä City Theatre has been given a new lease of life. Its distinctive architectural character has been preserved, while its functional and technical capabilities now meet the demands of performing arts today and in the future. The project demonstrates how demanding renovation and adaptive reuse can successfully combine the preservation of valuable architectural heritage with bold functional modernisation.
