The Hospital Campus Takes Shape
The second phase of the OYS2030 renewal project at Oulu University Hospital comprises the F Building and the C Building. In the completed hospital campus, the various functions and buildings will be closely interconnected, while the overall building footprint will represent only a small fraction of that of the original hospital complex.
Completed in 2025, the F Building houses a number of technically and operationally demanding units, including a new Centre of Excellence for Oncology, pharmacy cleanrooms, NordLab laboratories, medical imaging facilities, and various outpatient procedure clinics. The design of the F Building follows the agreed principles of the OYS2030 project, including patient safety, more efficient care processes, flexibility in the use of space, and the principles of open building.
The project was delivered using an alliance contracting model, and the building permit process was carried out in three stages, floor by floor. Both the spatial planning and façade solutions continue the architectural concept established for the OYS2030 campus. The glass artwork Elämänpyörä (“Wheel of Life”) by Kirsi Kaulanen dominates the building’s west-facing main façade.
The C Building will complete the hospital campus. Its completion will bring the decked parking facility to its full capacity and finalize the main entrance courtyard. The C Building will accommodate outpatient services, making it the part of the hospital with the highest volume of visitors.
