Laakso Hospitals’ principal and architectural design
Laakso Hospital’s principal and architectural design was sealed by a contract between a work consortium team LATU, the city of Helsinki and HUS (Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa).
The city of Helsinki and HUS have decided on to prepare a project plan for Laakso hospital. Last spring, the city of Helsinki and HUS arranged a public competition for the acquisition of the principal and architectural design of Laakso Hospital. The consortium team LATU was chosen, which includes Oulu-based Arkkitehtitoimisto Lukkaroinen, Helsinki-based AW2-arkkitehdit, Tampere-based Arkkitehtitoimisto Tähti-Set and Oulu-based UKI Arkkitehdit. These four offices are experienced professionals in hospital design. In the project, the architect Hennu Kjisik works as an urban city scaping professional.
The project planning of the hospital has begun, and the construction is tentatively scheduled for 2021-2026. The change of the city plan is being prepared alongside the hospital plans.
The operations of Laakso hospital
In addition to the hospital wards, clinics that practice supporting activities, will be placed in the Laakso hospital, in order to ensure the flexible and efficient care chains in hospital. The hospital will also have facilities for the psychiatric and geriatric studies, as well as other support services. In association with Meilahti campus, synergies between psychiatry and semantics will be utilized in developing the activities.
In the Laakso Hospital area, the aim is to accommodate a total of 425 beds of the current psychiatric hospital wards of HUS and Helsinki city, a total of 32 beds from children’s psychiatry and a somatic hospital, which means 450 beds for the city hospital and demanding neurological rehabilitation.
Scale of the project and the budget
Laakso hospital’s gross area approximately 150 000brm2 and in the need’s assessment phase the total cost of the project is estimated at 670-700MEUR.
